Jonathan was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania but raised in Ronks, Pennsylvania. He was born to Jim Groff, a horse trainer, and Julie, a phys-ed teacher. He has an elder brother named David. He is the first cousin of James Wolpert, a singer. He says that his childhood was both strict and free as his parents taught him to be well-mannered but never forced him to participate in things he wasn’t interested in. He completed high school from Conestoga Valley High School and later joined Carnegie Mellon University but did not follow through with it as he was cast in the national tour of The Sound of Music. He never continued college and moved to NYC instead. While he lived in Lancaster, he participated in at the Fulton Opera House and the Ephrata Performing Arts Center.
In 2005, he earned the Actors’ Equity Association card owing to his performance at the North Shore Music Theatre in the musical Fame. He entered Broadway in the same year with the musical called In My Life. In the summer of 2006, he bagged a role in a rock musical called Spring Awakening. He was then cast for the same role in its Broadway production which he played from 2006-2008.
