James Frain

James Dominic Frain is a stage and on-screen actor for English cinema. His birthplace is Leeds, West Yorkshire but he was brought up in Stansted Mountfitchet, Essex. He is the eldest of eight siblings and has a stockbroker and a teacher as parents. He studied at Newport Free Grammar School, went to college at the University of East Anglia and learned to act from the Central School of Speech and Drama in London. At his final year at drama school, he debuted in 1993’s Shadowlands. His talent was spotted by Richard Attenborough. His performance in 1995’s Nothing Personal won him a nomination for the Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival. 1999’s Sunshine got him nominated for Best Supporting Actor at Toronto's the Genies. He is best known for his major roles in popular television shows. He has portrayed Thomas Cromwell in The Tudors, which was on the air from 2007 to 2009. He also played Franklin Mott in True Bloods’ third season, Richard Neville in 2013’s The White Queen and Ferdinand in 2015’s Orphan Black.

He has also been the lead in many BBC dramas such as 1995’s The Buccaneers, 1997’s The Mill on the Floss and 2001’s Armadillo. His roles in 1998’s movies Hilary and Jackie and Elizabeth are also very famous. He has also been a part of The Count of Monte Cristo as Chief Magistrate Gérard de Villefort and has been a part of Titus as Bassianus. He was s, en in 2005’s 24, 2006’s Invasion, 2006’s The Closer, and The Cape. He also joined the second season off Grimm and currently stars in Gotham, playing the role of Theo Galavan. He has also acted along with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Royal Court Theatre and on the West End. His 2007 Broadway show The Homecoming made him the winner of the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Ensemble Performance in 2008, along with the entire cast. He has two children with Marta Cunningham, who he married in 2004. He is also an artist in his free time.
