James Daly’s birth name is James Firman Daly. Born to a father in Fuel Business and a mother who was a CIA employee, James was born and brought up in Wisconsin Rapids. From an early age, James had an interest in the field of acting and was constantly encouraged by his parents to pursue the same. James Daly’s first performance was on stage in his hometown of Wisconsin Rapids in the year 1928.

Daly’s interest took him to various Midwestern Colleges after High School. He, at last, graduated from the Cornell College in Iowa. As a result of War, James's career was on hold and he served for all the three service branches. He spent the last four years of war as an ensign in the Navy. Daly’s career actually started when he reached the City of New York in the year of 1946.

He landed himself a part in the long-running hit Broadway play of 'Born Yesterday'. As he played his third play titled 'Man and Superman' in 1949, he got paid the third highest salary in the cast and had already won the Daniel Blum Award for his performance. Daly was in demand both on and off-Broadway. He also co-starred with the legendary Helen Hayes three times, most famous of which was in "The Glass Menagerie" in the year 1950.

It was the same year that James received the Theater Guild Award for his performance in 'Major Barbara'. James Daly was always known as a hard-working actor who was intent on becoming a diversified actor and performs different media roles.

Daly as an actor understood the potential the live television drama offered. In the late 1940’s, he made his small screen debut and soon after he stared in early productions of Playhouse. Within the next few years, he started his own weekly syndicated series called 'Foreign Intrigue' in 1951 and also featured in it. The series was about foreign correspondents family in Europe. The show was one of the first shows that got shot on location.

It also resulted in the temporary relocation of Daly’s family to Stockholm and Paris. Another noted and well-remembered portrayal by Daly was that of a salesperson who is driven to the brink of a nervous breakdown and escapes to his own fantasy world of a simple and peaceful life.

This character was of 'The Twilight Zone' of 1959 in an episode of 'A Stop at Willoughby'. Throughout the next two decades, James made his name as a reliable television lead actor and was in much demand. He was often chosen to play tragic or despairing figures. His portrayal was commanding in 'Give Us Barabbas! (1961)' as it’s titular star. After four years, he got nominated and won an Emmy Award for his spectacular role in the episode "The Eagle and the Cage" of “Hallmark Hall of Fame (1951)” Daly played the ill-fated partner in business and friend with David Vincent in the pilot episode 'Beach-Head'.

(1966) as a near-immortal solitary figure. Daly also had a recurring role in the popular and long-running show “Medical Center” in 1969 with a total 170 episodes. He played the role of a resident ‘elder statesman’ to Chad Everett, a young surgeon.

Other than the above, Daly had n number of guest roles and a few choicest parts in a few films such as in 'Planet of the Apes' in the year 1968. James Firman Daly had just completed the filming of an episode of “Roots: The Next Generation” and had scheduled to perform at the historical Westchester Theater at the Tarrytown Musical Hall to appear in a play when he died of a heart attack. Daly was only 59 years old at that time.
