He was born in Compton, California. In his childhood, he used to write stories. He used the rough Compton streets in his lyrics as he grew up. He has rapped under the guidance of K-Dot, which made up to the release of popular mixtapes. His perfect work brought him to the attention of Dr. Dre, a hip-hop super-producer. He debuts with the major-label recording, m.A.A.d city. The album was released to great recognition and impressive sales with a great amount of promotion. He continued to receive recognition for his To Pimp a Butterfly album which even earned him 2015 Grammy Award.
His parents migrated to Compton from Chicago to escape from the city's bad culture, though his father had been associated with various Gangster gang. Because of his father's involvement in the gangs, he grew up around rough street activity. He was a very obedient student in school who loved writing, poems, and first stories, and then lyrics.
Though his family was influenced in the rough gangs Lamar is very soft-spoken, and a very good observer. He is greatly influenced by K-Dot and started his career as a rapper. In 2003 he gave his first mixtape Youngest Head Nigga in Charge when he was 16 years old.
The project was a huge hit and he got an opportunity to record with the Top Dawg Entertainment. In 2010 he left the K-Dot name and started delivering songs on using his own name. He fourth mixtape was Overly Dedicated. In the same year, he released his independent album Titled Section.80 under the banner of Top Dawg Entertainment. The album was exclusively released on iTunes.
He has done recording with many rappers and singers like The Game, Young Jeezy, Busta Rhymes, Talib Kweli, and Lil Wayne. Dr. Dre, one of the most respected and looked up hip-hop producers, was very much influenced by him and became his mentor and helped him in business and music.
In October 2012, Lamar's highly awaited debut album, m.A.A.d city, was released and received a lot of appreciation.
