Born in West Midlands, United Kingdom, he was brought up in Ballymena, Northern Ireland, and attended St Louis Grammar School. He graduates from the University of Stirling in Scotland, where he studied film, media, and art. Since 1984 he has been in a long-term personal relationship with Gill Moreton, a psychologist, whom he met at Stirling.

They are living in Edinburgh. Mark Cousins is a director and occasional presenter/critic on films. A fruitful producer and director, known for his 15-hour 2011 documentary The Story of Film: An Odyssey.

The film televising on More4, and later, featured on 2011 Toronto International Film Festival. From September 2013 displayed on Turner Classic Movies. TCM appreciated for each episode with relevant short films and feature films ranging from every day to the rarely seen, after drawing on its exhaustive film industry. They received a Peabody Award, in 2013, for being an inclusive, uniquely annotated survey of world cinema history.
