He was noticed as a writer and editor in 2003 when he wrote a short movie called The Good Life and edited it as well.
He then wrote three films which consecutively released in the years 2005, 2006 and 2007. These movies were The Butcher and the Housewife (a short film), followed by The Big Bad Swim and Goodbye Baby. He made his Directorial debut with Goodbye Babyin 2007. In 2008, he edited two flicks which included a short movie too. Meet Pete and The Project were his ventures in 2008. In 2013, he was involved in the editing of the flick Spaz. The film didn’t receive a lot of positive responses by the watchers. In 2012 he wrote, edited and directed a low-budget flick called Supporting Characters. The movie was debuted in Tribeca's Film Festival and was lauded for by the audience as well as the critics.
After directing two small-scale, low-budget standup comedies in 2007 and 2012, Daniel Schechter took a leap of faith towards a different kind of cinema. The flick was a dark crime comedy where two jailbreaks conspire a plan to kidnap the wife of Frank Dawson who was a Detroit Property Developer. The conspirators don’t realize the Frank had an extramarital affair and was more than happy with his wife’s disappearance. The movie revolves around this criminal but comic plot. Life of Crime closed the Toronto International Film Festival, leaving the audiences speechless with its marvel. Admitting his challenges, Daniel stated that creating the 70’s Detroit environment was an extremely tough task in the 2014 flick. The big screen phenomenon was surprisingly shot in just 26 days.
