Richard Anthony Marin, famous as Cheech Marin, took birth in Los Angeles in California to Oscar, who was in the police force and Elsa, who worked as a secretary. Richard was lovingly called Cheech (meaning: deeply fried skin of pig) by his uncle, and he received fame worldwide with this name. Â Marin spent his childhood days in Granda Hills. He received his basic education from a school there. Since his childhood Marin earned the reputation of a clown. He tried his hand at singing in small bands and trying to spread humour at Bishop Alemany High School. He later went to California State University to pursue his graduation in English Literature. However, he was a dropout and moved to Vancouver for avoiding the Vietnam War and met Tommy Chong there. This legendary meeting gave rise to a new world of comedy and performance involving Cheech and Chong. Marin tied his knot with the co- producer of The Corsican Brothers, Darlene Morley in the year 1975. Later, they divorced. They both were blessed with a child in the year 1984. His second marriage was with Patti Heid in 1986. She inculcated his fetish for Chicano Art which led to Marin becoming the largest collector of this art form. They also had two kids. But sadly enough, this marriage did not last long. He finally got engaged with his long-term affair Natasha Rubin in 2009. Â
