Bojan Bazelli is a world renowned cinematographer and music video director. He became a member of the American Society of Cinematographers in 2007. He is also a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Bazelli was born in Herceg Novi, Montenegro (then in Yugoslavia) on 15th August 1957, and his star sign is Leo. His father was a doctor and he spent his childhood and completed his high school in his hometown. As a child, he used to take pictures from his father's camera and had converted his mother's pantry into a dark room.
He got interested in filmmaking and had decided that he would go to a film school to learn the art of filmmaking and cinematography. In 1985, Bazelli graduated from Prague's Film and TV School. The film's director Abel Ferrara hired him straight out of film school after being impressed by one of his student films. When contacted for the first time for "China Girl", he thought it was a joke and ignored it, however later he found out that he was tracked down from his film school by an agent of Ferrara. He also filmed two more films with Ferrara, namely "King Of New York" and "Body Snatchers".
Some of Bazelli's popular films include "The Ring", "Mr. & Mrs. Smith", "G-Force", "The Sorcerer's Apprentice", and "Pete's Dragon" among others. He also worked with Adam Shankman on his film "Hairspray", and with Mariah Carey for the music video "Vision of Love". Bazelli has received the Independent Spirit Awards in 1990 for King of New York. In 1996 and in 1998, he received an award for Best Cinematography at American Independent Commercial Producers and he is one of the few cinematographers who have received this honour more than once.
He also received a Gold Clio award for Best Cinematography in 1998, and was awarded for Best Cinematography at the Montreal Film Festival for the film ‘Kalifornia’. Apart from movies, Bazelli has worked for many commercials. He liked the experience of shooting commercials because it allowed him to experiment with pictures in new ways. He shot his first commercial after shooting seventeen films. Bazelli is one of the very few modern cinematographers who have never switched to other departments. He always knew that he wanted to be a cinematographer and he has devoted all his time to the profession which is his first love.
