Amit Kaushik Shah was born on April 26, 1981, in England. Shah's parents were originally from Kenya, and his grandparents were from Gujarat, India. His father is an accountant, and his mother is a manager at a health food store. Shah was cast as the leading actor in a school play at 16. She studied acting at Staffordshire University and was subsequently trained at the London Academy of Music and Drama Arts in western London. In 2003, he began rehearsing the West End musical Bombay Dreams, produced by Andrew Lloyd Webber.
In 2006, Shah was offered a role at the Royal Hunt of the Sun at the National Theater. He stayed at the National Theatre, performed three plays, including Nicholas Hytner's Alchemist, and was nominated for the Ian Charleson Awards.
