Hemendra Kumar was born in Kolkata in 1888 on 2nd September. Hemendrakumar, the son of Radhikaprasad Roy, was born in an aristocratic Pathuriaghata family. A portion of Roy's creative ability came from his father, a highly skilled Esraj (a string instrument) player who frequently performed at the renowned Star Theatre in North Kolkata. His first piece of writing was Amar Kahini, a short story published in the journal Basudha in 1903. He joined the group of authors that contributed to the Bharati periodical edited by Sourindramohan Mukherjee and Manilal Ganguly in 1916. He also wrote several scary tales for kids. Hemendrakumar Ray took over as Nachghar's editor in 1925.

Along with this magazine, he also contributed as an editor for Rongmoshal and other literary journals. Hemendrakumar Ray produced more than 80 children's books throughout the following few decades. His contribution to the detective, horror, and science fiction genres that would make up a sizable percentage of Bengali children's early literature was tremendous. His first detective story got published in Mouchak in 1930. Hemendra Kumar Roy is renowned for his contribution to the early growth of the children's literature genre in the language. With his "Jayanta-Manik" and "Bimal-Kumar" stories, which follow the exploits of Jayanta, his helper Manik, and police inspector Sunderbabu, he made a significant contribution to the early development of Bengali detective fiction.

Roy also translated Omar Khayyám's Rubaiyat into Bengali. The well-known Alice in Wonderland translation is Roy's "Ajab Deshe Amala." Roy debuted Hemanta Choudhury, a new detective, and Robin, a buddy, and associate, in Ratrir Jatri. In addition to writing books for kids, Roy produced several articles, short tales, and novels for adults. Roy translated some works by foreign authors into Bengali, created the choreography for Shishirkumar Bhaduri's Seeta, and also took the role of a painter. Additionally, he wrote a book of lyrics titled Jaubaner Gaan, or "The Song of Youth." One of his short stories Sindur Chupri was translated into German and published in a book of short stories.

Seven short stories, including "Kukur Kahini," "Nakuler Daon Mara," "Maharaja Chor Churamoni Bahadur," "Kamon Kore Totlami Sare," "Kartik Pujor Bhoot," "Der Dozon Jahagi," and "Madhureno Somapoyet," are included in his comic book series Tara Teen Bondhu. Atal, Patol, and Nakul are the three main characters in this series and are incredibly well-liked by kids and teenagers. Television has adapted his works Abar Jokher Dhon and Ratrir Jatri. One of his stories, "Dersho Khokar Kando," or "The Deeds of 150 Boys," was made into a movie. Jighansha, a Bengali film made from his novel Nishithini Bibhisikha (1951). Nishithini Bibhisikha's life served as the inspiration for the hugely successful Hindi film Bees Saal Baad. Hemendra Kumar Roy, a prolific and well-known detective fiction author, used a pen name to attempt to document the vibrant nightlife of Calcutta in the 1920s.

He wrote a book titled Calcutta Nights, which claims that this city, which served as the simultaneous epicenter of renaissance, nationalism, and reform movements, should be the source of city sketches, which were first made famous in the mid-and late 19th century. The book "A Warning, Apparently" was written with the kind intention of warning "fathers of young girls and boys." Roy passed away on April 18, 1963.

The movie was based on the adventure duo story of Bimal-Kumar written by Hemendra Kumar Roy. Sagardwipey Jawker Dhan was the second film after Jawker Dhan and was released theatrically on December 6, 2019. Hemendra Kumar Roy was a firm believer in supernaturals, and he also used the supernatural element in many of his adventure & mystery stories. Apart from literary productions for children, Hemendra Kumar Roy wrote many short stories, essays, and novels for adults. As a choreographer & painter, he worked for Shishirkumar Bhaduri’s “Seeta.”
