Ramapada Chowdhury was a Bengali writer and an Indian Novelist. He received many awards in his lifetime, such as Sahitya Akademi Award for his novel Bari Badle Jay, Rabindra Puraskar, and many others. He was born on 28 December 1929 in Kharagpur, Bengal. He lived in different towns such as Raipur, Guwahati, Ranchi, and Bilaspur.

He studied in Calcutta at Presidency College and did his master’s at the University of Calcutta in English Literature. Then he got a job with Anandabazar Patrika. He wrote his first story when he was a student, which got published in the newspaper Jugantar. After completing master’s, he became the Associate Editor of the newspaper and edited Rabibasariya. His first novel Pratham Prahar was published in 1954.

Before this, he published two collections of stories. With his novel, Banpalashir Padabali received an identification that was published in the magazine Desh. Overall he wrote hundred short stories and fifty novels. Chowdhury won a prize at the Indian Institute of Planning and Management for his novel Banpalashir Padabali. Ramapada Chowdhury died of cardiac arrest on 21 July 2018. He always wanted the transformation of Indian railways, which he depicted in many of his works, and one such was a short story named Bharatbarsha or India. Indian author of Bengali novels and short stories, Ramapada Chowdhury. For his work Bari Badie Jay, he received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1988. He received several honours, including the Rabindra Puraskar.
Many of his works, including Mrinal Sen's multi-award-winning Kharji and Ek doctor ki maut, have been made into movies. Throughout World War II, Chowdhury started writing. He had long been associated with Anandabazar Patrika. In Bengal, he is a well-known short story writer.
On December 28, 1922, Ramapada Chowdhury was born in Kharagpur, India (then under British rule). Mahesh chandra Chowdhury, his father, was a railroad worker. Hence, the family frequently relocated. Ramapada Chowdhury, who was still relatively young, learned how to live in various regions of India. He was given the name Durgasyndari Devi after his mother. In Kharagpur, he completed his studies. He attended Presidency College at the University of Calcutta and graduated with a master's in English literature from there.
Chowdhury wrote his first short tale while still a student in response to peer pressure. He wrote the article while he was held near to his college; it was eventually published in the Jungantar Newspaper. After completing his master's degree, he received the Anandbazar Patrika's appointment. He eventually attained the post of assistant editor for a newspaper.
He was awarded the Rabindra Puraskar in 1971 for his novel Ekhoni and the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1988 for Bari Badle Jay.
Chowdhury had been an introvert for the majority of his personal life. He voluntarily retired from his employment due to health problems that prevented him from writing. A lengthy period of Bangla literature comes to an end with his passing.
