Syed Mustafa Siraj was an Indian essayist, novelist, and story writer who was born on October 14, 1930, in Khoshbaspur, Murshidabad, Bengal Presidency, British India, and died on September 4, 2012, in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. He was married to Hasne Ara Siraj. He has written novels and short stories in Bengali. He knows several languages, like Arabic, Persian, and Sanskrit. He is known for his notable work in writing novels like Aleek Manush, Trinabhumi, Inspector Bramha, and several short stories like Uro Pakhir Chhaya, Manusher Janma, Ranabhumi, Rakter Pratyasha, Maati, Goghna, and Mrityur Ghora. He also worked as a journalist for the Bengali daily newspaper.
He has won several awards like the Sahitya Akademi, Bankim Puraskar, Bhuyalka Puraskar, and Ananda Puraskar. For his book Amartya Premkatha, he received the Narasimha Das Memorial Award in 1988. Bengali films have been made based on his works, Krishna Bari Fereni and Nishimrigaya. His well-known short story, "Ranir Ghater Brittanto," was also adapted for the big screen in the Bengali film Faltu, released in 2006.
