Chandrakanta is a fantasy series that is relatively based on the novel of the same name by Devaki Nandan Khatri. Originally, the series was broadcasted on Doordarshan channel under the production of Nirja Guleri and directed by Sunil Agnihotri from March 1994 to April 1996. But later on, the television series was pulled off air by the channel in year 1996. The producer and director filed a case in the Delhi High Court for the restoration of the show and subsequently, the show was telecasted again on Star Plus from 1998 to 1999 and Sony Entertainment Television from February 23, 2004 to June 28, 2004.
Chandrakanta is a television series about the undying love set against the brawl and rivalry between the Naugarh and Vijaygarh Kingdoms. Virendra Singh (played by Shahbaz Khan), the Prince of Naugarh and Chandrakanta (played by Shikha Swaroop), the Princess of Vijaygarh are passionately in love with each other. However, they long for each other due to the battle between the two kingdoms. King Maharaja Surendra Singh (played by Parikshit Sahni) of Naugarh and the King of Vijaygarh (played by Surendra Pal) used to be the best of friends, but later became the best enemies when Prince Virendra was accused of murdering Prince Shakti Singh of Vijaygarh. Because of Chandrakanta’s exquisite look and elegance, every kings and villains used war and black magic just to marry her.
The Chandrakanta television series received several controversies during the time that it was aired on Doordarshan channel. Besides taking the reinstatement of the show to the court, the grandson of Devaki Nandan Khatri stated that the production has not done justice to the Chandrakanta of Devaki. He also made an accusation that the producers intentionally misrepresented some concepts from his grandfather’s novel, including, the Tilism, Ayyari and Jaado-Tona. Also, the characters and the story of the Chunar kingdom were exaggerated further than what is needed, and the Chandrakanta shows off after a long time in the series.
The other cast of the show includes Javed Khan, Mukesh Khanna, and Durga Jasraj, Rajendra Gupta, Krutika Desai Khan, Irrfan Khan, Roopa Ganguly, Mamik Singh, Pradeep Rawat and a lot more. Some of them rose to fame for their performances in the serial including Pankaj Dheer, who played the role of Shiv Dutt, the King of Chunargh and the main leads, Shahbaz Khan and Shikha Swaroop, who later played a quite similar role as Kaikayee in Ramayan.
