Plot
Devdas returns home from London after ten years at law school. Devdas and Parvati (Paro) are childhood sweethearts who are deeply in love with one another. While Paro’s family has accepted their relationship without any objections, Devdas’s family doesn’t seem to do them the same courtesy. And when Sumitra is invited to a party hosted by Devdas' family where she hopes she will be informed that their family has accepted her daughter as their future daughter-in-law, she is finally brought to her senses when Kaushalya publicly humiliates her and tells her to get her daughter 'married off to someone else'. In a fit of anger, Sumitra resolves to marry Paro to the prosperous Zamindar Bhuvan. However, Paro doesn’t seem concerned when she learns that Devdas’ parents have rejected her because she knows that Devdas will come to her aid. But will he? How will their relationship move forward? Will Devdas’ family ever accept Paro? Will Paro end up marrying the Zamindar? What will happen next? The rest of the story deals with that.
Star Performance
Shah Rukh Khan’s performance is vital as a soft wimp but a likable one. Aishwarya Rai does full justice to Paro by bringing out the strength, integrity and compassion of her character. Madhuri Dixit has truly outdone herself in the role of Chandramukhi. The actress expertly conveys the dual shades of flamboyance and naivety, seamlessly combining allure and sacrifice in the role. The supporting cast also does a decent job of shaping the storyline.
Analysis
The star cast did justice to their roles. The film's first half is an enjoyable mix of lighthearted and dramatic scenes, setting the stage for a much better and bigger second half. But the post-interval part fails to hold the audience’s attention for several reasons. Even though the cinematography was excellent, there weren't many background scenes featuring the city or the outdoors. The plot was predictable, but the mesmerizing sets and fantastic performances somewhat made up for it. The climax scene was the highlight of the film. It was a very refreshing and classy way of preserving the original yet transforming it into a wholly new and vibrant tale.

Verdict
Devdas is a hugely entertaining Bollywood production that benefits from well-developed characters, uniformly superb acting performances and a sweetly romantic first act. The film is a must watch for all its hype, grandeur, music, money, blood, sweat, tears and tragedy even the most unromantic ones out there.
