The Filmfare Awards are the biggest form of salutation to actors in India. Year after year, Filmfare has honored some of the best films and performances by nominating them in respective categories and giving an award to the best of the lot. Being nominated for this award show is itself a very big deal. It gives support and encouragement to the actors to do even better work in future. However, Filmfare often fails to nominate some of the best performances of the year, instead choosing to nominate the most popular. Here are some of the performances that deserved to get a Filmfare nomination but failed to do so.
Released in February 2016, Aligarh is the story of Shrinivas Ramchandra Siras, a professor at the Aligarh Muslim University who was shunned from society due to his homosexuality. His fight against his University and the society to save his honor formed the theme of the movie. The role of the Professor was played by Manoj bajpayee. He gave an intense and heartfelt performance as the oppressed academician. Aligarh won several awards at International Film Festivals and critical acclaim in India. Surprisingly, this outstanding performance by Manoj Bajpayee was completely ignored by the Filmfare Awards.

Margarita with a Straw was the story of a teenager suffering from cerebral palsy. The movie follows her journey towards self-discovery and her quest towards discovering her sexuality, apart from showing her struggle to lead a normal life and do normal activities. The film was brilliantly executed and won several accolades on the International circuit. The role of the protagonist, Laila, was played by Kalki Koechlin. Her performance was so convincing that people thought she was suffering from the disease. Though Kalki gained a lot of love and praise, she failed to get a nomination for that year’s Filmfare Awards.

. All the ladies gave brilliant performances, and the movie was loved by the Indian and foreign audience. Though Radhika shined as the free-spirited Lajjo who is regularly beaten up by her husband due to her inability to bear a child, the jury at the Filmfare Awards did not think her performance important enough to deserve a nomination.
Airlift was based on a true story about the mass airlifting of Indians from Kuwait when it was attacked by Saddam Hussein’s men from Iraq. Akshay Kumar played the role of Ranjit Katyal, a successful businessman in Kuwait, who fights hard to get his countrymen out of danger at a time of emergency in Kuwait. Kumar’s performance got rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. Airlift instilled renewed feelings of nationalism in the viewers. Akshay Kumar is currently one of the greatest actors of Bollywood, yet his performance in Airlift was surprisingly left out of the Best Actor nomination list in this year’s Filmfare Awards.
Nil Battey Sannata is the heart-warming story of a mother who works hard as a maid to ensure proper education for her daughter so that she does not have to face the difficult circumstances that the mother is facing. When the daughter refuses to pay attention to her studies, the mother enrolls in her daughter’s school to learn Maths and help her out. The beautiful story managed to capture the hearts of the audience, and Swara Bhaskar was greatly praised for her role as the mother. However, she did not receive a Filmfare nomination for her brilliant work.

Aamir was Rajkumar Gupta’s first film, and a fast-paced thriller brilliantly shot and executed. It was TV actor Rajeev Khandelwal’s vehicle to Bollywood. His performance was beyond anybody’s expectations, completely carrying the film on his shoulders till the very end. Every aspect of the film was perfectly thought out and deserved recognition.
