Leo Prabhu

Leo Prabhu was born in 1933. He is a novelist, dramatist, and playwright. He was born in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. Prabhu has been interested in football and acting since childhood. He mainly worked in Tamil industry. He began his career as an actor at the Boys Company and has worked in Tamil theatre. Later, he founded his troupe called 'Stage Image'. He rose to fame soon after that. He is well known among Tamils worldwide for his service and contributions to the Tamil theatre. His journey in the industry started in 1950. Prabhu is a media person and an author, too. As an actor he has expertise in theatre, tele-serials and cinema. As a director he got success in theatre plays and tele-serials. He has also written screenplays, dialogues and novels. In 1974, he worked in the Tamil film Paruva Kaalam. And in 1983, he worked in another Tamil film Idhu Enga Naadu. He is also known for movies like Naan Mahaan Alla(1984) and Pudhir(1986). He is a versatile dramatist. In Tamil theatre, he has been associated with S.V. Sahasranamam and Y.G. Parthasarathy. He has lots of experience in theatre. The government of Tamil Nadu honoured him 'Kalaimamani' for his contributions to the Tamil theatre in the year 1990. This award is given to the people related to art and cinema. He has been promoting art since the post-independent era.

He has worked with many leading directors as well. He has also directed plays and television serials. He didn't do well as an actor as some of his works went unnoticed. He only tastes success as a writer and dramatist. Leo Prabhu is married to Usha Prabhu and has a daughter. His daughter's name is Murugashankari Leo. She is a famous Bharatnatyam dancer, research scholar, and a theatre actor. He sees theatre as a medium of education and entertainment and calls it a down-to-earth medium where actors put their efforts and sincerity. Prabhu is known as the epitome of determination. The Kalaimamani awardee has acted in over 5,000 plays and penned 40 social dramas. Prabhu died on 30 December 2023 in Madurai.
