Sundar Rao Nadkarni

Sundar Rao Nadkarni was a personality known for his acting, direction, and production skills. He was also a known editor and cinematographer too. Nadkarni was born in a family with a Konkani background. His place of birth, is Mangalore. Nadkarni had chiefly worked in the Tamil Film industry. Nadkarni stepped into the film industry and made his debut as an actor in a silent movie, produced by the 'Surya Films.'

He initially worked as an actor but thought of boosting his career, by learning the film direction and editing. For this, he went to Mumbai and took up these skills too.His talent also got noticed by Avichi Meiyappa Chettiar, a well-known producer, and also worked with him. During his career he moved places. He went to Coimbatore and eventually landed in Madras. Later, he permanently settles there. Nadkarni has given some masterpieces, which were a blockbuster.

In 1942, his movie EnManaivi became a huge hit.After that, he also directed the film 'Haridas' in the year 1944, which gained massive success and soon made records. Haridas became the only Tamil film, which was launched on a single screen and ran for almost a hundred and ten weeks. Haidas was one of his massive achievements. His work in 'SanthaThukaram' released in 1963, won the ‘National Film Award'.

It was the best feature film in the Kannada dialect. Nadkarni has also directed and worked with many eminent actors of the Tamil industry, such as T.R Rajakumari, Narsimha Bharti, Savitri, and many others too. His other prominent works include, Koteeswaran, Mahadevi, Bhukailasa, and Azhagi, released in the year 1955, 1957, 1938, and 1953. Sundar Rao Nadkarni has significantly contributed to the industry with his artistic creations. His film “Haridas” will always be an evergreen movie, which is still praised by the audience. It won’t be wrong to say that he has won many hearts and has acquired a secure place.
