Aishwarya R. Dhanush is a well-known Indian film director, playback singer and classical dancer. She was born on January 1, 1982 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu in India to the legendary actor in Tamil film industry, Rajinikanth and film producer
. She is the youngest in the family and her sister, Soundarya R. Ashwin also works in the Tamil film industry as a producer and director. She completed her education in a law school that is managed by her mother. Aishwarya got married to Tamil film actor, Dhanush and they have two sons, Yatra and Linga.
She made her directorial debut in the Tamil coming-of-age romantic drama film, ‘
’ in year 2012, which stars Dhanush and
in the lead roles. Even though the film failed at the box-office, Aishwarya received nomination at the SIIMA Award for Best Debutant Director. The song Kolaveri Di became immensley popular because of its unconventional style. She also helmed and penned the dialogues and story of the recently released psychological comedy thriller film,
Vai Raja Vai
. The film stars
in the lead roles. Aishwarya stated in an interview that she was impressed with Gautham’s work in Kadal by
and so she decided to cast him in the film.
She also sang the song “Natpae Natpae” in the 2003 Tamil film, ‘
’ and “Un Mela Aasadhan” in Selvaraghavan’s ‘
’ in 2010, through which she earned a nomination at the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer. Aishwarya worked as an associate director of the film as well and became a voice actor for Reemma Sen’s character.
Prior to working in feature films, Aishwarya used to do short films with the help of the people close to her, like her husband and Anirudh. Recently, she launched her YouTube channel, Ten Entertainment, to promote South Indian short films by the aspiring filmmakers. The channel releases four films each in four languages (Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada) every Thursday. Aishwarya believes that in the long run, some investors might be interested in financing the films. Dhanush’s very own Wunderbar Films and Divo were using the social media to promote these short films.
Aishwarya may be the daughter of a superstar (Rajinikanth) and a wife of another superstar (Dhanush), but she worked hard to carve her own niche in the Tamil cinema. She did not attend any film school, yet she managed to learn all the ropes of the industry by being an assistant director, to making her way up to where she is now.
