K Babu is a politician from Indian National Congress, born on 2nd June 1951 in Angamaly, Cochin, Kerala. His parents are K Kumaran and K Ponnamma. He did his schooling at St Joseph’s School in Angamaly. He completed his graduation at Sree Sankara College in Kalady. Babu’s political career started when he was in School. In 1966, he joined the Kerala Students Union.
Babu was the youngest Municipal Chairman in Kerala and he was the first Chairman in the Municipal Council, Angamaly. He had been the President of Youth Congress Block Committee and Youth Congress District Committee in 1977. He was the Director of Kerala State Consumer Federation and also the Kerala Plantation Corporation. From 1982 to 1991, he was the General Secretary of Ernakulam District Congress Committee. He also served as the Vice-Chairman of Kerala University Union and the President of the District Football Association. He was the office-bearer of many Trade Unions in his state and was the General Secretary of INTUC. He is the Executive Committee Member of KPCC. Babu founded the Fine Arts Society in Angamaly.
In 1991, he became the MLA for the first time and his opponent in the election was MM Laurence, who belongs to CPM. Babu contested from Tripunithura constituency. Babu had been the MLA of Tripunithura constituency from 1991 to 2011. Babu lost to Swaraj of CPI (M) in the 2016 election. In 2021, he won the state assembly election in a margin of 992 votes and became the MLA for the sixth time.
Babu is married to Geetha and has two daughters. They live in Thrippunithura in Cochin.
