Binoy Viswam was born on 25 November 1955 in Kerala, India. He is a representative of the Communist Party of India (CPI) and a member of the Rajya Sabha. His father’s name is C.K. Viswanathan, and his mother’s name is C.K. Omana. Binoy’s father was a famous campaigner and strategist and also the leader of the Communist Party of India. Binoy joined the world of politics during his school days. He was the Unit Secretary of the All India Students Federation (AISF) in Vaikom Government Boys High School. Later, he served as the State President and All India Secretary of AISF. He was also elected as the Vice President of the World Federation of Democratic Youth (WFDY) and also Head of its Asia Pacific Commission. Binoy also became the State Secretary of the All India Youth Federation (AIYF).
At the age of 18, he became a member of CPI. He has won the "Ambassador of Friendship Among World Youth Award" conducted by the Young Communist League of the Soviet Union. Binoy got married to Shaila George, an officer in the Kerala Gramin Bank at Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. Shaila’s father, Koothattukulam Mary, also belonged to politics. He was a party leader turned teacher. Binoy and Shaila have two daughters named Rasmi & Surya. Surya graduated with a degree in law from Columbia University and is practicing law at the High Court of Kerala, while Rasmi is working in The Hindu.
From 2006-2011, Binoy worked as the Forest Minister of Kerala. Currently, he is a senior CPI leader and also the president of the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation Employees' Federation. He was one of the five members of the Constituency Delimitation Committee.
