Thara Kalyan is an exceptionally gifted Indian Classical Arts dancer, and an actor in Malayalam TV and Movies. She has also qualified professionally as a dancer in Mohiniyattam, Bharatanatyam, and Kuchipudi.
Daughter of one of the more famous Supporting Actresses’, Subbalakshmi, Thara has made a name for herself not just as an actor, but also as a TV Anchor/Host for a few programmes on Doordarshan, and has also judged the popular show Patturumal on Kairali TV.
Her movie debut was with the movie Amme Bhagavathi (1986), followed by Sukhamano Devi, Marikkunnilla Njan, Parankimala among others. Thara, or Dr. Thara Kalyan, has been trained in Bharathanatyam, Mohiniyattam and Kuchipudi for more than 10 years under the famous dance masters, the late Kalaimamani Rajarathinam Master, and Sri Vinayachandran. Her interest in dance started at a very young age, where she used to perform for Onam celebrations in her locality to her mother’s tunes. Following her training, she has instituted the “Sri Mookambika Academy” where she has been training students for over 26 years. She attributes her discipline and attitude to dance, which she claims is a way of life, almost indispensable.
