. David was born on 17th August 1967 in Swissvale, a suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His father Jim is an engineer while his mother Margaret is a librarian. He grew up as the youngest of the three sons in Edgewood, another suburb of Pittsburgh. The famous electrical engineer Frank Conrad is his ancestor.
He went to Swissvale High School but soon transferred to an all-boys prep school called The Kiski School in Saltsburg on a scholarship. He graduated in 1985 and went to Brown University to study history. While at BU, he started acting. He left in 1990, and joined a historical society working as a carpenter, a painter, an interviewer, etc. David enrolled at the Juilliard School in
to study theater as a member of the Group 25 of Drama Division. There he acted in a stage adaptation of The Cider House Rules, a novel by John Irving, co-directed by Tom Hulce.
In his final year, Conrad received an offer to star in the TV movie Snow White in the
(released as Snow White: A Tale of Terror) alongside
, which he accepted and left Juilliard before earning his degree. Despite this, he has rejected film offers like The Boogie Nights and Deep Impact to pursue theater instead. By the mid-90’s, he had appeared in films like Darkness, Under Heat and the TV series Relativity in which he starred in the lead role. In 1998, he appeared in the movie Return to Paradise with
. Conrad continued his theater career, starring in The Deep Blue Sea in 1998, marking his Broadway debut.
He got his big break when he appeared in Ghost Whisperer as the husband of Jennifer Love Hewitt’s character for five seasons until its cancellation in 2010. He also acted in the hit comedy Wedding Crashers in 2005. His other film appearances include the drama Men of Honor (2000), Anything Else, Follow The Prophet, etc. He has also guest appeared on shows like The Good Wife, CSI: Miami, The Firm, Law, and Order: Special Victims Unit, Castle, etc. Between 2013 and 2014, David had a recurring role in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as Ian Quinn. He lives with his wife Nina Garcia with whom he has a son named Lucas.
