David was born on 17th August 1967 in Swissvale, a suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His father Jim is an engineer while his mother Margaret is a librarian. He grew up as the youngest of the three sons in Edgewood, another suburb of Pittsburgh. The famous electrical engineer Frank Conrad is his ancestor.

He went to Swissvale High School but soon transferred to an all-boys prep school called The Kiski School in Saltsburg on a scholarship. He graduated in 1985 and went to Brown University to study history. While at BU, he started acting. He lives with his wife Nina Garcia with whom he has a son named Lucas.
