Known to his fans in India as Raphael Augusto, Raphael Augusto Santos da Silva is a Brazilian footballer who plays for Chennaiyin FC in ISL in the central midfield position. Once in a while, he takes over defensive and attacking midfielder roles as well. Born in Rio de Janeiro, Augusto is the son of a taxi driver and a nurse.

Like any typical Brazilian kid, he picked up football at a very early age. He started his professional carrier when he represented U-20 side for the top tier Brazil club, Fluminense. This acquaintance was temporary and only lasted for a few matches. It was in 2009 that he became a part of the club team. His debut match for Fluminense was in Campeonato Carioca, an annual football championship of Rio de Janeiro against Boavista in April 2009 as a 73rd-minute substitution.

His first Brazilian League match was against Santos, four months later, where he came in as a 57th-minute substitute. Augusto has played for different clubs in different countries on loan in years spanning his term with Fluminense. He played for Carioca in 2011, before a short stint with Brazilian Series B side Duque de Caxias, which ended in 2012. Throughout 2012, the midfielder played for teams like America-RN and DC United, making on total 17 appearances in the year.

He continued with DC United until he joined Legia Warsaw in 2013. In 2015, he played on loan for Madureira for awhile before Chennaiyin FC loaned him later the same year. It is in the Chennai-based team, did he receive the glory he deserved. His outstanding performance in the 2015 ISL season led to the team lifting its first ISL championship cup. Knowing his value, the team’s then manager and head coach, Marco Materazzi, signed him for the 2016-17 season.

Though the team’s performance was in shambles that year, his tenure extended through a two-year contract that ends in 2019. His exceptional performance in the 2017-18 ISL season once again led the club to lift the trophy anew. In the three years that he has been a part of the league, he has not only risen to be a top player and a fan favorite but also has received several personal awards for his performances.

Though he is a star in the eyes of his fans, he is humble and feels that he loses if the team loses, regardless of his performance in the game. On many occasions, he has conveyed about his special bond with the Chennai and India. Though he aspires to play in Europe in future, his main focus currently is on Chennaiyin FC.

Gregory Nelson is a Dutch professional footballer who plays for Chennaiyin Football Club in the Indian Super League, as a winger. He was born on 31st January 1988 at Amsterdam, Netherlands. Gregory started his career from youth teams of AZ Alkmaar. In 2007, Gregory made his senior team debut for AZ in the Dutch Eredivisie against Heracles Almelo. In the football season of 2009-10 of RBC Roosendaal, Gregory was on loan basis. The loan contract had an option to purchase the player; he continued up to 11th June 2009. Then Gregory was released by RBC on 11th January 2010. In 2010, after six months of releasing from the RBC, Gregory signed for CSKA Sofia. In January 2012, Gregory signed for Ukrainian club Metalurh Donetsk on a three-and-a-half-year contract. He made his official debut on 11th March 2012, from Donetsk playing the first 74 minutes of the 1:1 home draw with Metalist Kharkiv in a Ukrainian Premium League match. FC Metalurh Donetsk had gone bankrupt. After several months of bankruptcy, on 9th October 2015, Gregory returned to Bulgaria. He signed a contract with Botev Plovdiv until the end of the season. On 23rd October 2015, Gregory debuted for Botev Plovdiv and won the match against Pirin Blagoevgrad. On 29th November 2015, Gregory played the match for Botev Plovdiv and got defeated from Litex Lovech. Then also, he got selected for the man of the match. Gregory has scored a controversial goal against Beroe Stara Zagora. He got awarded for the man of the match in that match. Even in the interview immediately after the game, Gregory admitted that the ball hit his hand before he scored the goal. On 16th January 2017, Gregory signed for Kazakhstan Premier League side FC Kaisar, but his contract was terminated shortly after for personal reasons. After this contract canceled, Gregory joined Bahraini Premier League side Al-Muharraq. In September 2017, Gregory signed for Chennaiyin FC in the Indian Super League made his name shine by playing matches.

Mailson Alves

Mailson Alves Barreiro Veriato, otherwise known as Mailson Alves is a Brazilian footballer who plays for Chennaiyin FC as a defender. Born in Brazil, Alves started his football career with the Brazilian club San Jose. He changed clubs in 2009 and joined Portuguese second division club Portimonense. His debut match for the club was in October of 2009 against Beira-Mar, where the Brazilian started the game and played till the 85th minute. His performance was imperative to the club’s second position finish in 2009-10. In 2011, he was back at Brazil and joined Porto Alegre. His debut for the club was against Nova Hamburgo, where he started and played until the 68th minute. He continued with them for two years, making 11 appearances, including at the Campeonato Gaucho. In 2012, he left Alegre to join Tombense but was immediately loaned out to Serie D club Vila Nova for the 2013 season. His debut match was against Marcilio Dias, where he played the whole game. In 2014, after a season with Nova, he returned to Tombense and debuted in a match against América. He changed clubs again in 2015 when he joined Serie C side Tupi. Alves played for the club for two competitions, Serie c and Campeonato Mineiro along with 2015 Copa do Brazil, where his performance was integral in upsetting Serie A side Paranaense. In the same here, he joined Chennaiyin club for the second season of ISL, where his 12 appearances in backline helped the team lift the cup for the first time. After the ISL, he went on to do short stints with clubs like Volta Redonda and NorthEast United before he was back to ISL donning Highlanders’ jersey for season 3. For the season 2017-18, he was back in the Chennaiyin squad and was the highest scoring defender of the season with four headers, two of which were in the final. His incredible performance led the team to reach finals, where his two headers were pivotal in the team winning the title once again. He is one of the only three players of the club who were part of the squad when the team lifted the cup. At the end of the season, the club extended his contract for two more years. In an interview, he expressed his attachment to India and the club. He considers India and Chennaiyin as his second home and wishes to stay longer with the club. At present, he is training hard at the club’s pre-season tour in Malaysia ahead of the new season of ISL around the corner.
