He is an American.He was born on October 27th, 1988 to Iris and James Turner in Chicago, Illinois. He is 28 years old with a height of 6 feet 7 inches and weighs approx. 100kgs. Within a year of his birth, he had suffered from chicken pox, pneumonia, asthma and measles. At the age of three, he was hit by a car which resulted in him getting concussion and stitches. He had to undergo speech therapy because of speech impediment caused by oversized baby teeth and overbite. Turner completed his schooling from St. Joseph in Westchester, Illinois and completed his college from Ohio State University.
Even before his high school , Turner was the star player of the basketball team of his school in Oak Park, Illinois. During the 15-under Basketball National Championship in 2004, he played for Illinois Knights. When he played for his school , he helped his school’s team to win the game in the Basketball Tournament at the high school level. His performance caught the attention of national level Basketball coaches. He played for the Wisconsin Badgers Basketball team in the 2005. During his junior season, his team made it to the state sectional final but had lost in the finals to Proviso East High School. He committed to Ohio State located in Columbus, Ohio during the summer of 2016. During his senior season, St. Joseph team was listed at the second place in the high school basketball team rankings. During this year, his team lost the game to Simeon Career Academy at super-sectional tournament. He was ranked at the third place in the Illinois Mr. Basketball voting. He was ranked at no. 7, no. 13 and no. 16 by ESPNrivals.com and scout.com respectively.
He also received scholarship offers from many universities. As a freshman, he played for Ohio State and made his first career double score on 19th January, 2008, at Thompson-Boling Arena. In 2008, he helped Ohio State team win the 2008 National Invitation Tournament at Madison Square Garden. During his sophomore year, he was awarded player of the week 3 times during the 2008-09 season, as he led his team to win the game. During the season, he was selected unanimously by the coaches and the media as a member of All Big-Ten team. Even though his team, the Ohio State lost the final game to Purdue, Turner was selected to play for the team in the 2009 tournament. In 2009, he played for Junior USA World University Championships team and helped them to win bronze medal. As a junior, he scored his first career triple double score by a big ten player and the second in his school’s history against Alcorn State University.
This earned him another big ten player of the week award. He suffered transverse process fracture in his back on December 5, 2010 and he was advised to take two months rest from the game, but he recovered early and returned to the team on January 6, 2010. He helped his team to win co-championship of the big ten conference season and earn the number one position in the tournament. During this tournament, he helped his team to keep up their winning streak by performing consistently. He was named Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament and was made a part of the Tournament team. On April 5, 2010 Turner was awarded Naismith College Player of the year in Indianapolis. On April 9, 2010 he won John Wooden Award. He won Robertson Trophy as the consensus choice by the voters in all the nine geographical districts. The Fox Associated Press and Sporting News had named him as the Player of the Year.
He was also one of the sixth finalists for the Bob Cousy Award. Turner has played for four teams of NBA from 2010. He was first selected by the Philadelphia 76ersto play at the National level. He signed a 2-year contract with a 3rd year option worth approx. $12 million. On his 22nd birthday, i.e. October 27, 2010 he played for the first time for the Philadelphia 76ers, but his team had lost the game. However he got his first NBA game where in he scored a double-double and led his team to victory against New York Knicks. During the years 2010-2013 he helped his team to win many games by scoring consistently.
On February 20, 2014 the Philadelphia 76ers exchanged Turner for Danny Granger with the Indiana Pacers. On February 25, 2014 he played for the Indiana Pacers for the first time against the Los Angeles Lakers. On April 6, he scored 23 points and helped the Pacers to win the game against the Milwaukee Bucks. He got into a fist fight with Lance Stephenson on April 21, 2014. Turner and Stephenson were competing for their first big contract as both were free agents. On September 29, 2014 Turner officially signed a deal with the Boston Celtics. He began his career with Celtics as a reserve, but due to a player getting injured he got a chance to play and he helped the team to win by scoring 19 points. On July 6, 2016 he signed a four-year contract with the Portland Trail Blazers worth $70 million. He has been playing with this team presently. On February 8, 2017 he suffered from a fracture in his right hand and is advised a rest of five to six weeks and thus he had to sit out of the recent game against the Dallas Mavericks.
