Teresa Salgueiro O.I.H. (Order of Infante D. Henrique) is a Portuguese singer, lyricist, and songwriter whose soothing voice and poignant music has pervaded the world in the past three decades. She was born on 8 January 1969 in Lisbon, Portugal. Her career started when she joined the musical ensemble Madredeus in 1986.

In the following twenty years, from 1987 till her exit from the band in 2007, she lent her voice as the lead singer to numerous melodies, selling more than five million album copies worldwide.

She is regarded as the first international representative of Portuguese music since Amália Rodrigues. In 2006, she released her first music album as an independent artist, “Obrigado,” featuring several renowned musicians, including José Carreras, Angelo Branduardi, Caetano Veloso, and António Chainho.

The next year she collaborated with Septet João Cristal and the Lusitânia Ensemble for the albums “Você e Eu” and “La Serena” respectively, where she dove into the seas of diverse musical forms, proving her versatility in singing.

She was also invited by Polish composer, Zbigniew Preisner Zbigniew Preisner is a Film Score Composer. He was >> Read More... , to contribute as the lead soloist in the album “Silence Night and Dreams,” which had its concerts set up all across Europe. In 2011, she retired to the Convent of Arrábida, where she compiled her first independent album “O Mistério.” She single-handedly composed, wrote, and directed all the songs of the album, which was co-produced by António Pinheiro da Silva, who had accompanied her in the first ten years of her musical journey.

The songs of the album were translated into Mexican and Latin American as well. An exclusive edition of the disc, “La Golondrina and El Horizonte” was released in Mexico with a world premiere at the Cervantino Festival. Teresa released her most recent album “O Horizonte” in 2016 for which she was felicitated with the José Afonso Prize on 30 November 2017 by the Municipality of Amadora.
