Sid Vicious, whose birth name is John Simon Ritchie is a singer and bass player. He is one of the members of Sex Pistols. He was born in Lewisham, London, England, on May 10, 1957. Sid's mother Anne Ritchie worked with the Royal Air Force while his father Ritchie was Buckingham Palace's guardsman and musician too.
Soon after his birth, Ritchie ditched Anne, and she moved to Ibiza and married Christopher Beverley. However, Beverly died owing to cancer and Anne and Sid had to change a lot of places. Sid started his professional career with the Flowers of Romance. After some terrible struggles Sex Pistols offered him to join them when Glen Matlock departed. He accepted the offer. However, he had become addicted to heroin as well and this lead to problems within the team.
Belsen Was a Gas was Sid's composition that the band sang. Sometime later, everyone from the Sex Pistols separated. Sid embarked on his solo career. He sang The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle, At the Electric Ballroom, Chaos and Disorder Tapes, and much more.
Sid also collaborated with various musicians. Filmmakers have made several films depicting his life like Sad Vacation: The Last Days of Sid and Nancy, Sid! By Those That Really Knew Him, Sid and Nancy, and much more.
In 1977, he met Nancy Spungen, a stripper and prostitute and started dating her. It was she who got him hooked on heroin although Sid was already consuming other drugs before he met her. Anne was aware of her son's addiction and would even indulge it.
Sid first showed his violent streak when he assaulted a journalist named Nick Kent with a chain and threatened Bob Harris a presenter of Old Grey Whistle Test and BBC DJ. After an argument with Nancy he killed her and police arrested him.
After her death Sid gave interviews in which it was evident that her passing had affected him immensely. Subsequently, he got embroiled in several assault cases. On February 1, 1979, he overdosed on drugs and died. Anne found his body the next day. His remains lie in Garden State Crematory, New Jersey. In 2006, Rock 'n' Roll Hall Of Fame inducted his name along with the other members of Sex Pistols.
