Margaret Brainard Hamilton was born on 9 December, 1902. She was born in Cleveland in Ohio, USA. She was a film character actress. Walter J. Hamilton was her father and Mary Jane was her mother. She was the fourth child in the family. She went to Hathaway Brown School. It was in Cleveland on 1945 East 93rd Street. In 1923, Margaret made her debut stage performance. When she was a part of the Junior League of Cleveland, she practiced in a children’s theater craft. Later she moved to Painesville in Ohio. She went to Wheelock College because her parents insisted that she attend college before acting. Later she became a kindergarten teacher. Margaret’s film career started in the year 1933. She appeared in the film, "Another Language" directed by Edward H. Griffith.
She then appeared in the films, "Hat, Coat, and Glove", "There’s Always Tomorrow", "By Your Leave", "Broadway Bill", "The Farmer Takes a Wife", "Way Down East" and "Chatterbox". In 1936, Margaret appeared in the film, "These Three". She acted as Agatha in that film. She then appeared as Mitty Simpsons in the film, "The Moon’s Our Home", as the bookkeeper Grace Franklin in the movie, "The Witness Chair" and as Lizzie Beadle in the film, "Laughing at Trouble" in the same year. In the year 1937, Margaret appeared in the films, "You Live Only Once", "When’s Your Birthday?", "The Good Old Soak", "Mountain Justice", "Saratoga", "I’ll Take Romance" and "Nothing Sacred". In the year 1938, she appeared as Mrs. Harper in the film, "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer".
She then appeared in the films, "A Slight Case of Murder", "Mother Carey’s Chickens", "Four’s Crowd", "Breaking the Ice" and "Stablemates" in the same year. Margaret married Paul Boynton Meserve on 13 June, 1931. The couple got divorced as her acting career grew on 1938. She brought up her son, Hamilton Wadsworth on her own. She never married again. Margaret Hamilton appeared in more than 50 films including "Twin Beds", "City Without Men", "Guest in the House", "Driftwood", "Bungalow", "Lust for Gold", "Riding High", "The Daydreamer", "The Wizard of Oz", "The Anderson Tapes" and lots more.
The last film in her career was in "Journey Back to Oz" in 1974 for which she rendered voice. Margaret also made some special appearance in television like "The Sesame Street" in 1970s, as Miss Pownthleroy. She also appeared in "Car 54", "Where Are You?", "The Patridge’s Family" and many more. Margaret served from 1948 to 1951, in Beverly Hills Board of Education. She developed Alzheimer's disease and died on 16 May 1985 in her sleep due to a heart attack. She was incinerated at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery.
