When her mom was pregnant, her parents got separated. Her great grandfather's name was Emanuel. She went to the Spence School, Manhattan, but later dropped out to pursue her career. At the age of 7, she joined the Metropolitan Opera ChildrenÂ’s Chorus to practice opera.
She performed onstage with the chorus, and with great singers such as Luciano Pavarotti and Plà cido Domingo. When Emmy was 12 years old, she pursued acting classes in New York City with Flo Salang Greenberg of the New Actors Workshop. She achieved her diploma at the age of 15, from high school via online courses through Stanford University. Later, she attended the Columbia University. In 1991, she got nominated for the Young Artist Awards for outstanding performance in a TV movie, Genius.
It was a story about Charlie (Trevor Morgan), a 14-year-old boy who maintains double life in high school and college to make new friends of his mental age as well. She played the role of Claire Addison, Charlie’s love interest. She made her debut in the feature film ‘Song-catcher’ (2000) as an Appalachian orphan, named Deladis Slocumb.
Along with Emmy Rossum, other singers who appeared in the movie also featured on its soundtrack. This movie, for its Outstanding Ensemble Performance, achieved the Special Jury Award at the Sundance film festival. Emmy earned a nomination at the Independent Spirit Awards for the best debut performance. Later, in New York, she auditioned for Christine Daae's role in Andrew Webber’s ‘The Phantom of Opera’, which was an on-screen adaptation of a novel of the same name.
Webber realized that Emmy had the ability for playing the teenage opera singer who becomes the victim of PhantomÂ’s obsessive love. She earned a nomination at the Golden Globe Awards for Best Actress in a musical drama; she even won the Young Artist Award for her performance. Emmy is also actively engaged in social causes. She is the ambassador of the Youth Aids and also the official spokesperson for Pinkitude- a campaign to help raise breast cancer awareness.
She is also an advocate of the Best Friends Animal Society. On 17th February 2008, she married music executive Justin Siegel but publicly presented themselves as unmarried. Emmy got divorced on 28th December 2010. She got engaged to director and writer Sam Esmail after dating him for two years, in August 2015. She is suffering from celiac, an autoimmune disease, in which the body is intolerant to any gluten-containing foods. Shalom Life ranked her no. 6 on its list of “The 50 Most Talented, Intelligent, Funny and Gorgeous Jewish Women in the World” in April 2012.
