Joel Tobeck took birth in the beautiful city of Auckland, New Zealand. He did many acting assignments while being in New Zealand and gained experience of about 20 years in the same field. His family background revolves around acting too. His mother, Liddy Holloway did a lot of theatre and television work in New Zealand and his father, Bryan Tobeck, is a trained musician and dancer from Auckland Performing Arts group. Tobeck did a lot of Australian and American TV series throughout his career. He performed the role of Tim William in Tangle and the role of Donny in Sons of Anarchy. Besides being an actor, he also outshined as a singer and a guitarist and was even a part of 95bfm which is an Auckland radio station.
His notable performance is the one he did for Darcy Clay band and the house band Tadow. He not only achieved the appreciation for positive roles but also got credit for the negative role performed in the Shortland Street, which was a soap opera. Next came the fictional series, Hercules: The Legendary Journey, which fostered his acting career and honed his acting skills. Tobeck did television series and movies simultaneously. People saw him in series called Cleopatra 2525. He did notable work under huge makeup in the movie The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.
He also worked in movies like 30 Days of Night and Eagle vs. Shark. He won New Zealand Film and Television Award in 1997 which succeeded TV Guide New Zealand TV Award in 1999 and nomination for New Zealand Screen Award in 2006.
