In 1996, he completed his high school for Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, New York. He started working as a voice actor in the movie Daria in 1998. He gave voice to the character of Charles Ruttheimer 3, both in the movie and its video game version Inferno. Arend started out with small roles in movies and TV shows. He played a college boy in the 2001-released film Super Troopers and 2004 –released Garden State. The actor was also a part of the 2009’s surprise hit (500) Days of Summer, where he played McKenzie, a co-worker of the lead actor. In the recent past, the actor was seen in Worst Friends, where he portrayed the character of Jeremy. In 2016, the actor has worked as a voice actor for the animated film The Angry Birds.

He has worked on numerous television sitcoms, Daria being his debut serial. He made a cameo in the comedy serial Undeclared in 2002 as Jimmy. The actor was seen playing main roles in sitcoms like Trust Me (2009) and Body of Proof (2011-13). In 2014, the actor appeared in the medical drama Grey’s Anatomy as Thom in the episode “Throwing it All Away”.
