Chiwetel Umeadi Ejiofor was born on 10 July 1977 in Forest Gate, London, England. His parents are Arinze and Obiajulu. Arinze, his father was a doctor while Obiajulu, his mother was a pharmacist. He also has a sister. He is the elder brother to Zain Asher, a CNN correspondent. When Chiwetel was 11, his father died in a car accident while he was badly injured. The scars he received in the accident can still be seen on his forehead. Chiwetel went to Dulwich College when he was fourteen. He joined the National Youth Theatre. He was an active member of the group. After leaving Dulwich College, he came in London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts.

He got a role in 1996 with Deadly Voyage. After that, he was seen in Amistad. He did theatre role of Othello in 1995 and 1996 in the theatre play titled Othello. He did theatre with plays like Macbeth (1997) as Malcolm, Sparkleshark (1999) as Russell, Blue/Orange (2000) as Chris, Romeo and Juliet (2000) as Romeo Montague, Peer Gynt (2000) as Young Peer. His other plays include The Vortex, The Seagull, A Season in the Congo, Everyman, etc.

Chiwetel has done television series like Deadly Voyage (1996) as Ebow, Murder in Mind (2001) as DS McCorkindale, Twelfth Night (2003) as Orsino, Trust (2003) as Ashley Carter, The Canterbury Tales (2003) as Paul, etc. He has appeared in different television series. In Love Actually, he played the role of Peter which was released in the year 2003.
