He started his career in the entertainment industry as an animator and writer. He worked developing more than a hundred hours of television programming for various children's series, such as The Little Show, Animal Crackers, The Busy World of Richard Scarry, The Adventures of Paddington Bear, and Caillou.
Joseph Mallozzi is well known for his contributions to the “Stargate: Atlantis” (2004), “Stargate SG-1” (1997), and Stargate Universe television series. In 2000, he joined the Stargate production team at the beginning of Stargate SG-1’s fourth season. Joseph Mallozzi was an executive producer and writer for all three Stargate series. He worked with writer Paul Mullie in the critically acclaimed sci-fi series, “Stargate: SG-1” in its fourth season. After working eleven years for the Stargate series, Joseph Mallozzi then went on to pursue independent projects. He is then noted for his contribution as showrunner of a science fiction series “Dark Matter” in 2015.

He worked in the animated series, “Night Hood,” based on Maurice Leblanc’s Arsene Lupin novels and produced by Cinar & France Animation S.A. He worked as a writer in the syndicated television series "The Lost World," based on the 1912 novel titled "The Lost World" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. He also worked in a 1981 American parody Slasher comedy film, “Student Bodies,” written & directed by Mickey Rose.
Joseph Mallozzi co-created with Paul Mullie the comic book titled, "Dark Matter" in 2012. Later, the comic book became a television series with Mallozzi and Mullie co-writing. In February 2020, he co-produced with R. T. Thorne a Canadian television series, "Utopia Falls," which premiered on the streaming service Hulu. As of 2021, he is set to adapt an epic fantasy novel, "The Powder Mage Trilogy," to television. As a producer, he worked on many television series such as Caillou (1997), Big Wolf on Campus (1999), Student Bodies (1997 – 2000), Utopia Falls (2020), and many more. He worked as a story editor in numerous television series, including Animal Crackers (19997 – 1998), Flying Rhino Junior School (1999), George and Martha (2000), and Mona the Vampire (1999 – 2001).
Joseph Mallozzi was nominated for the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation for Stargate SG-1’s “200” in 2007. In 2009, he was nominated for the Leo Award for Best Screenwriting in a Dramatic Series for Stargate: Atlantis. The same year, he won the Leo Award for Best Dramatic Series for Stargate Atlantis. The following year, he was the winner of the Leo Award for Best Dramatic Series for Stargate Universe. He was nominated at the Prix Aurora Awards for Best Visual Presentation for Dark Matter series in 2016, 2017, and 2018. In 2021, Joseph Mallozzi was nominated for the Canadian Screen Award for Best Children's or Youth Fiction Program or series, Utopia Falls. The same year, he won the Writers Guild of Canada (WGC) Award for Utopia Falls.
