Bob Spiers was born in Glasgow on September 27th, 1945. He fostered an affection for acting at Southgate College, north London, England, where he became associated with youth theater, visiting Britain with different drama groups. After graduating from the college, he joined the staff of the BBC in 1967, where he gradually made progress by working as an assistant floor manager and later a production assistant to becoming a director and producer. As he gained exposure and learned many creative skills, he was chosen to direct the second series of Fawlty Towers in 1979, which was a massive success and gained a worldwide reputation.
Spiers left the staff of the BBC soon after he directed the series and the unbroadcast pilot of Not the Nine O'Clock News, to work as a freelance director. All through the 1980s, he dealt with various projects, like the comedy series-Comic Strip Presents and the BBC sketch shows-French and Saunders and A Bit of Fry and Laurie. From 1989 to 1993, Bob directed the teen comedy-drama series named Press Gang. Garnering immense popularity in Hollywood, he was recruited by Disney to direct the film That Darn Cat, and soon he came up with the next movie, Spice World. He was twice a Bafta winner, and few know that he was also a national junior tennis champion. At the age of 63, Bob died of cancer in December 2008 in Widecombe, Devon.
