Mustafa Hussein

Mustafa Hussein was a cartoonist (a visual artist who draws cartoons for entertainment, political commentary, and advertising), painter, and journalist of Egyptian origin. Born in Egypt, he studied photography at the Faculty of Fine Arts. He graduated from there in the year 1959. He did photography for a while, then slowly turned towards cartoon making and drawing. He made his debut in the year 1980. He started creating a weekly cartoon magazine and caricature. However, he did not do that alone. He did this with his friend, Ahmed Toughan. Ahmed is also an Egyptian cartoonist and artist, and they both studied together. Ahmed was born in Egypt and was raised in Cairo. Mustafa and Ahmed had a successful partnership. Together they published more than fifty-thousand cartoons in newspapers, journals, and magazines. They also illustrated many cartoon books.

Due to his talent and hard work, Mustafa received many awards. He stands out in all ways. He did such outstanding work that he is one of the most important names in the Guinness Book of Somali Figures. He received the most prestigious award, which was the Gold Award for the Duke of Edinburgh. He did not receive it immediately. Instead, he was honored after his years of service and dedication. He also earned another prize in the year 2009. He received the Order of Distinction with First Class, and he also achieved the State Award. The Arts of the Supreme Council of Culture honored him with it. The State Merit Award was given to him in the year 2010. Again in the year 2011, he earned the second prize in the Emirate of America. Global Forum Art of Cartoons organized it. In this event, more than a hundred artists came from thirty different countries. Just not at the National level, but he was also awarded in the International Festival of Cinema. Apart from these many awards, he received the certificates of appreciation. One was from the Cambridge University in the year 2010, and the other was from the Oxford University in the year 2011.
