On February 2, 1978, Richard Olen Sommer II was born. He is a well-known American actor best recognized for his role as Harry Crane in the AMC drama series Mad Men. He is well recognized for his appearances in the comedies The Devil Wears Prada (2006), Celeste and Jesse Forever (2012), The Giant Mechanical Man (2012), and Hello, My Name Is Doris (2013). (2015). Sommer was born in Toledo, Ohio, and grew up in Stillwater, Minnesota, attending Oak-Land Junior High School and Stillwater Area High School. He continued his education at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, where he majored in drama and sang in The Concordia Choir.

Sommer studied improvisation at the Brave New Workshop in Minneapolis and founded the Slush Puppies improv group in Moorhead. He earned his Master of Fine Arts in acting from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, in 2004. Sommer returned to the university in 2006 to teach icebreakers to law students and again in 2008 to lead an improv session with undergraduate theatre students. Sommer's best known film role to date is as Anne Hathaway's sidekick Doug in 2006's The Devil Wears Prada. He has appeared in ads for Bud Light, Dairy Queen, Nextel, and Sprint. Sommer played Harry Crane in AMC's historical drama series Mad Men from 2007 until 2015. Sommer debuted as a guest star in two episodes of NBC's mockumentary comedy The Office in 2008, playing Alex. In 2010, he appeared as Jimmy Wilson in an episode of Ugly Betty. Sommer appeared as an electrical engineer and CIA consultant Malcolm Mitchell in two episodes of The CW's drama-thriller series Nikita in 2011. Sommer reprised his role as Harlan Emple in a November 2014 episode of CBS's procedural drama series Elementary, after guest-starring as the character the previous year.
