Andreas Katsulas is an American motion picture and television artist, largely known for his secondary and villainous roles in television shows and movies. He was born on May 18, 1946, in St. Louis, Missouri, to a labour Greek American household. He is quite acclaimed for his character as Jakar or G'Kar in the American science fiction television series ‘Babylon 5’.
He was name Andrew Katsulas at birth. Quite attracted to performing in the theatre from a tender age, he later went to acquire his bachelor's degree in theatrical arts from Saint Louis University and a master's degree in theatre from Indiana University in 1969. He then joined Peter Brook's International Theatrical Company, and travelled with them from 1971 until 1986, playing improvisational and staged theatre pieces on venues ranging from the Lincoln Centre to Venezuelan barrios. He played the character, Lucien Goff, on the CBS daytime programme ‘Guiding Light’ in 1981 and 1982. Katsulas made his cinematic debut as Andreas Tikides, a door-to-door salesperson who schemes a homicide, in the film ‘Serie Noire’, released in 1979.
Katsulas has also starred in films such as ‘Hot Shots! Part Deux’, ‘The Sicilian’, ‘Someone to Watch Over Me’, ‘Next of Kin’, ‘Sunset’, and ‘Executive Decision’, among various others. In 1993 film ‘The Fugitive’, he played the one-armed villain Fredrick Sykes. ‘A Piece of Eden’, ‘Mafia!’, ‘New York Cop’, and ‘The Painted Desert’ are among his many credits.
Katsulas was a regular face as Zachary Pscharapolus or Ambassador G’Kar in the television series ‘Babylon 5’, from 1994 to 1998. He played Romulan Commander Tomalak in the popular sci-fi show ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’. Apart from all this, Katsulas has also starred in ‘Millennium’, ‘Diagnosis: Murder’, and an ‘ABC Afterschool’ special episode titled ‘A Very Delicate Matter’. He also appeared in the 'Star Trek: Enterprise’ episode 'Congenator' in 2003 as Vissian Captain Drennik. It had been one of his final broadcast appearances prior to his demise. Katsulas was a persistent smoker and was identified with terminal lung cancer in early 2005 to which he ultimately succumbed on February 13, 2006, at the age of 59.
