Born as Alan Hale MacKahan on March 8, 1921, to the famous theatrical film actor Alan Hale Sr. and American silent film actress Gretchen Hartman, Alan Hale Jr. was an American actor and restaurateur. During the four decades of his acting career, he has appeared in around 200 films and TV shows and several talk shows. He began his stage career, in 1931, with the play “Caught Wet” and later on made his screen debut with “Wild Boys of the Road” in 1933. During World War 2, Hale has also served in the United States Coast Guard from 1942 to 1945. However, what brought him to the limelight is his iconic role as “the Skipper” in the 1964 sitcom Gilligan’s Island.
He played the secondary lead role in all of Gilligan’s Island’s three seasons– a total of 98 episodes, as well as reprised the same role in three of its television films, Rescue from Gilligan's Island (1978), The Castaways on Gilligan's Island (1979), and The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan's Island (1981). Hale was married to Bettina Reed Doerr from 1943 to 1963, and they had four children: Alan Brian, Chris, Lana, and Dorian. Later, Hale married Naomi Grace Ingram, and they remained married from 1964 to 1990, until his death. He died on January 2, 1990 at the age of 68, due to thymus cancer at St. Vincent Medical Center in Los Angeles and his ashes spread into the Pacific Ocean.
Some of his other noticeable roles was in, To the Shores of Tripoli (1942), Yanks Ahoy (1943), Sweetheart of Sigma Chi (1946), When Willie Comes Marching Home (1950), The Three Outlaws (1956), The Big Trees (1952), Destry (1954), A Man Alone (1955), The True Story of Jesse James (1957), The Long Rope (1961), The Giant Spider Invasion (1975) and Angels Revenge (1978). He was also Star on the Walk of Fame [Winner] on 8 February 1960, at 6653 Hollywood Blvd.
