Sabitri Chatterjee is an Indian actress. She has mainly worked in Bengali cinema. Her contribution to the Bengali film industry is for more than 50 years. She is one of the most honored and respected by the young generation. She was born in the Comilla District’s small town of Kamalapur. It is now in the region of Bangladesh. She had ten sisters, and Sabitri was the youngest of them all. During the partition of Bengal, she went to her sister’s place in Kolkata. Her sister was married in Tollygunge. It is considered as the main center for film and its making in Kolkata. During the early days, she started with theater. She was a part of Uttar Sarathi, which was a theater group. The group was doing a play called 'Natun Yahudi'. It was based on the refugees of East Pakistan. Kanu Banerjee was the director of the play. In 1952, she had played the lead female role in Pasher Bari a movie by Sudhir Mukherjee. She was later seen in Subhada, which was again a film by Sudhir Mukherjee. The movie was based on a novel, and Sarathi played the role of Lalana, who was an unfortunate girl.

Uttam and Sabitri were very good friends. They were a hit pair in Bengali film industry till date. Their chemistry and presence in the screen were so good that it was rumored that the two were in love and had got secretly got married. They both had given numerous hits. Lakh Taka in 1953, Anupama in 1954, Kalyani in 1954, Punar Milan in 1957, Raja-Saja in 1960, Bhranti Bilas in 1963, and many more. They both appeared in the first feature film of Mrinal Sen’s Raat Bhore in 1955. She has been a part of Bhranti Bilas, Dhanyi Meyewhich is till date one of the best comedy films in Bengali. For some years, Sabitri had not taken part in any movie and returned to the screen in 1980 with Mamoni, and Haar-J. Sabitri not just kept her work up to movies but as a part of the Bengali television industry. She was a part of the super hit serial Sonar Harin on ETV Bangla. Sabitri is appreciated with many awards. She won The Bengal Film Journalists' Association (BFJA) Award in 1967, for best-supporting actress in the movie "Kal Tumi Aleya". In 1972, she won the BFJA Award for "Malyadan" in a supporting role. In 1999, she won the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in for acting in Bengali theater. She received the D.Lit degree in 2012, from Kalyani University. In 2013, she was honored with Banga Bibhushan Award for her contribution to the cinema and in 2014; she was awarded with Padma Shri for her contribution to Film Arts.
