Rudraprasad Sengupta is a director, actor, and cultural critic based in West Bengal. He was born on 31 January 1935 in Kolkata when it was a Bengal Presidency under the British Indian government. He is the son of Usha Prabha Sengupta and Anant Sengupta. He holds a Bachelor's and Master’s degree in English Literature from the Scottish Church College of the University of Calcutta. He started his professional career as a lecturer at the Sreegopal Banerjee College in Mogra, Hooghly.
Later, he worked as a reader in English at the Brahmananda Keshab Chandra College, Calcutta, and also served as a visiting lecturer in the Drama Department of Rabindra Bharati University. His daughter’s name is Sohini Sengupta, who is also one of the leading actresses in the Bengali theatre and film industry. Rudra joined a Kolkata-based theatre group Nandikar in 1961, and in the early 1970s, he began to direct various dramas and plays for the group. Soon, in the late 1970s, he became the leader of that group and directed various plays including Football, Feriwalar Mrityu, and many others.
As an actor, he has acted in some of the most popular Bengali films and made his acting debut in 1966 with a film called Galpa Holeo Satyi. After that, Rudra was featured in various Bengali, English, and Hindi films such as Hatey Bazarey, Diba Ratrir Kabya, Sagina Mahato, Padi Pishir Barmi Baksha, Ali Baba, City of Joy, Little Buddha, Autograph, Room No. 103, Purbo Poschim Dokkhin Uttor Ashbei, and Dharmajuddha. Moreover, Rudra has won several awards, including the highest national award from Sangeet Natak Akademi in 1980. He also won the Banga Bibhushan Award in 2012 by the Government of West Bengal for his contributions to theatre. In 2013, he was also awarded Anukul Samman at the National Drama Festival in Allahabad.Â
