He was born on 26 August 1920 in Dakha (now Bangladesh), India. He was the son of Suniti Bandopadhyay and Jitendra Bandopadhyay. His wife Nilima Bandopadhyay was a playback singer. He completed his schooling at Pogose School and St. Gregory’s High School in Dakha and later got his Bachelor of Arts degree from Jagannath College, Kolkata. Bandopadhyay started his career as a stand-up comedian and later shifted to acting. He debuted with the movie ‘Nishiddha Phal’ in 1928. His film ‘Abhijog’ released in 1947 gave him recognition and Nirmal Dey’s ‘Basu Parivar’ in which he played the character of a Bengali businessman was his biggest breakthrough role.
The movie ‘Sharey Chuattor’ released in 1953 made hum rise to fame. The actor was famous for his comedic roles but his range was not limited only to this. He played some versatile roles in movies like ‘Galpo Holeo Satti’, ‘Nirdharito Shilpir Onuposthitite’, ‘Amrita Kumbher Sandhane’, and ‘Alor Pipasa’. He was the main lead in ‘Miss Priyamvada’, ‘Ashite Ashiona’, ’Sworgo Mortyo’, ‘Jamalaya Jibanta Manush’, and ‘Personal Assistant’. He acted in several other movies like ‘Apradhi’, ‘Jagaran’, ‘Kal Parinaya’, ‘Sharbhora’, ‘Bardidi’, and many others. Bandopadhyay also founded his theatre group called Mukto Mancha, where he used to act, direct, and produce his works. His last movie was ‘ Shorgul Click to look into! >> Read More... ’, which came in 1984. Bandopadhyay died due to a heart-related illness in Kolkata at the age of 62 on 4th March 1983.
