Being primarily a Bengali filmmaker, he worked in both Hindi Cinema and Bengali Cinema, making films including Kabuli Wala, Louha Kapat, Sagina Mahato, Apanjan,Kshudhita Pashan, and children's films Safed Haathi and Aaj Ka Robinhood. Tapan Sinha began his career in 1946, as a sound engineer with the film production company New Theatres in Kolkata, then in 1950 he shifted to England, where he worked at Pinewood Studios for two years.

Before returning home to start his six-decade career in Indian Cinema, directing movies in Bengali, Hindi, and Oriya languages, covering genres in social realism, family drama, labor rights to children's fantasy. He is one of the well-known filmmakers of the parallel cinema movement in India. Tapan Sinha was born in Kolkata, West Bengal. His interestin films began in his life as a student. He was a student in Durgacharan M. E. Bhagalpur School in 5th standard.

It later became a high school.
