Gary Scott Winick was an American filmmaker, editor, and producer. He is known for directing “13 Going on 30” and “Tadpole.” He has production of November (2004) and Pieces of April (2003) to his credit. On 27 February 2011, aged 49, he died of Pneumonia which resulted from his brain cancer. It took hold of him in 2009. He did his schooling from Columbia Grammar and Preparatory School in an administrative division.

In 1979, he graduated from school. He went to Tufts University, Massachusetts and completed his college in 1984. He took his Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Texas at Austin and the AFI (American Film Institute) Conservatory, Los Angeles. In 1986, he edited a short film of Carl Franklin named Punk. In 1999, he founded an independent production company calledInDigEnt (Independent Digital Entertainment) which is based in New York City, USA. Independent Film Channel provided the finance with the agreement that the company will produce at least ten films under minimum budget. Earlier films include Richard Linklater's Tape, The Anniversary Party and Ethan Hawke's Chelsea Walls. The films didn’t do well commercially or critically. His own movie (Tadpole) got released under InDigEnt’s banner. It was commercially (Made under the budget of $150,000) successful and got appreciation from audience alike.

It was a story about a self-conscious intellectual who yearns to be with his stepmother and is also involved with her friend. In 2002, he received an Independent Spirit John Cassavetes Award for the production of the film Velocity. In 2003, Pieces of April, produced under his banner, received an Oscar nomination for Patricia Clarkson.
