Plot
The plot of the movie revolves around the life of Kalyanam, a young Koothu(a traditional Tamil art form where epics are depicted through acts) artist. As the film progresses, Kalyanam is seen trying to navigate through his professional challenges, societal pressures, and personal life problems. Kalyanam is trained by his uncle and mentor Thandavam to play female roles in their acts. Because of such training, he gradually developed feminine qualities and mannerisms. This led to him being socially criticised for not acting like a man. His mother wished to see him play male roles and rise to fame, just like his late father. All these societal expectations made his life difficult. The lack of social respect in his life also affects his love life. He becomes romantically involved with his mentor’s daughter, Jega. When they seek Thandavam’s blessings to get married, Kalyanam is brutally humiliated by his mentor.Even though Jega wants to get married anyway; Kalyanam denies that course of action and tries focusing on his art form. The viewers are taken into a flashback which shows Kalyanam’s father Ilavarasu starting the very first jama (acting troop) in their village and rising to fame. But Thandavam betrayed him. Thus, Kalyanam’s aim is to have a jama of his own, dedicated to his father’s legacy. Further into the movie, viewers are shown more about the tragic past of Ilavarasu and how Kalyanam faces difficulties while starting his own troop.
Star Performance
The debutant director Pari Elavazhagan has also done a commendable job as the lead actor. His experience as an actor is quite evident through his performance. His acting is seamless, as he switches between the different personalities of his character. The supporting actors have also delivered performances that are worth applauding.
Analysis
The first part of Jama shows the different personalities of Kalyanam and Thandavam through their actions. This part engages in exploring their opposite thought processes. This part establishes the characters as the protagonist and the antagonist, respectively. However, as the second part begins, the film feels forced and dragged. Other discrepancies occur as well. Inconsistency can be seen in Kalyanam’s character. For example, he sometimes acts out and takes rash decisions while he is shown as a responsible character. The movie focuses primarily on showcasing the rich culture of the art form of Theru Koothu. The detailed costumes, live recordings and engaging performances serve their purpose very well by captivating the audience with the looks of the performers.
