Plot

It’s the early 18th century and a war for the Spanish succession is going on. England is at war with France but that does not stop all the fancy merriment activities like duck racing or pineapple eating. The throne is under the control of Queen Anne, played by the evergreen Olivia Colman Olivia Colman, whose birth name is Sarah Caroline >> Read More... and assisting the queen is Lady Sarah, Queen’s closest lady friend. Queen suddenly starts becoming ill and asks lady Sarah to look after and govern the country in place of her ill health, indirectly of course. A former aristocrat, Abigail hill arrives at the palace with no fortune and practically begs for a job. She is appointed as a servant. Abigail quickly learns of the functioning of the palace and sees an opportunity to get back her fortune and position and create a better life for herself. While Sarah is busy with the war politics and governing, Abigail begins to spend time with the queen, to be her companion in times of loneliness, this angers Sarah, and it marks the start of a cold war between the two ladies. The movie will focus on who will come out victorious among the two ladies and become the queen’s favourite.

Star Performance

Emma Stone Emma Stone was born in Scottsdale, Arizona. Her or >> Read More... , Olivia Colman, and Rachel Weisz She’s one of the acclaimed and well-received actre >> Read More... star together in one movie focusing on female dynamics. The movie is about power, greed, politics, ambiguity, and evil. The three women have done a tremendous job portraying the depth of their characters, and their involvement in violence, adultery, and dirty politics. The men in the movie have little to no role accept adding to the usual elements of the main three ladies and their story.

Analysis

I love a drama piece, anything to do with costumes and hefty dialogues, makes me want to devour that movie. The favourite is one such movie that I was looking forward to for a while, so when I finally watched it, I for sure had thoughts. I love how the story only revolves around the three men and their lives, we do get to see our lovely Joe Alwyn with 18th century deemed makeup occasionally, but the movie mainly only draws attention to the lives of Queen Anne, her loyal friend, and companion Sarah and a poor ex-aristocrat Abigail trying to climb her way back to richness. The movie has amazing cinematography, The dialogues and the costumes are era-appropriate, and mix it with themes of violence and adultery and dirty politics, you have a winner. Olivia Colman manages to shine wherever she is, in every role from comedy to crime, she brings her A game and that makes her my definite favourite British artist.

What’s There

  • Three amazing and talented women
  • Rich storyline
  • Nearly perfect cinematography
  • Era appropriate dressing

What’s Not There

  • Lack of flaws

Verdict

You know I love a bit of history and period drama with a good emotional rollercoaster, The favourite has it all, from the actors and their costumes to their marvellous acting, the movie is a must watch for appropriate audiences.
