This crime comedy is heavily inspired by Dodie Smith’s novel ‘The Hundred and One Dalmatians’ and its character Cruella de Vil. It is set in 1970s London and an aspiring fashion designer Estella Miller. The film garnered very positive reviews and many nominations for awards.
Plot:
The story starts with a teenage Estella’s mother, Catherine telling her to be on her best behavior and avoid getting into trouble at school. However, Estella fails to do that as she always stands out due to her unique hair color and is bullied at school for the same. She fights against her bullies, which causes a ruckus, eventually leading to Catherine pulling her out of school to move to London. But Catherine dies while trying to borrow money from an old acquaintance, leaving a 12-year-old Estella orphaned. Estella loses her mother’s necklace in the commotion. Estella then manages to go to London, where she befriends Jasper and Horace, two street urchins. They start practicing planned thievery and fraud to earn money. Years later, Estella is given a job by renowned Baroness von Hellman, who later is discovered to be the one who caused Catherine’s death. Estella takes revenge against her with the help of her alter ego, Cruella, with constantly upstaging the Baroness by her flamboyant fashion choices. The two regularly locking horns with each other and the relationship they have with each other forms the rest of the story.

Analysis:
The film with its signature Disney effects is a very entertaining watch that provides a very good insight into one of the most famous Disney villains, Cruella. It captures real-life scenarios and struggles faced by the ‘lower classes’ in the 1970s quite well. The costumes look magnificent, and the movie does a great job at showing the origin of a diabolic main character embracing her evil side.

Verdict:
All in all, the movie has an engaging and impressive villain origin story. The soundtrack did justice to the movie, and the costumes were simply amazing. It is a visual feast with little to complain about if you are in the mood for a good Disney movie.
