Plot
The plot opens in the early 20th century in Transylvania. R.M. Renfield, an English lawyer comes to meet Dracula in hopes of getting profit as a broker from the land and property deals. But Dracula managed to control Renfield and made him his servant. Now Renfield possesses super strength, super speed, and can even face sun rays, he gets all his powers by eating insects and bugs. The scene skips ninety years later when Renfield is tired of serving Dracula. They encounter a massive fight with the Vampire hunters and Dracula gets injured. So, they decided to get shifted to an abandoned hospital, to hide Dracula and Renfield will arrange fresh blood for Dracula’s recovery. Will Renfield ever set himself free? The rest of the movie revolves around it with a lot of drama, fights, and fun.
Star Performance
Nicholas Hoult’s performance is fun, comedic, and full of thrill, especially the jokes that are hilarious punches to the character of Dracula. The best and the most robust performance and aspect of the film is easily Nicolas Cage as Dracula. Awkwafina is equally vital in comedy and this role also offers a few dramatic moments. The rest of the cast along with Nicholas Hoult is a significant lead, and supporting roles from Awkwafina and Ben Schwartz are great fun. The dialogue is well-written, and the plot is silly enough to keep your entertainment.
Analysis
Renfield is a stupid, gory, bloody, funny mess. Not a horror by any means but it still satisfied my appetite for a little Halloween fun. The action is exaggerated and unbelievably bloody, but the story is functioning enough to satisfy. The only issue with the film is parts where the dialogue feels like it is written by a teenager and some illogical plot holes that seem to be an issue as far as editing goes. Also, what holds back the plot is violence, which is portrayed in a fun picture. Nicolas Cage as Dracula brings the Cage elements you expect while still having an intimidating presence. Even though he gets enough screen time, more Dracula would've been appreciated. The plot wasn't as particular as it could have been, but it's still pretty good and the moral message is well woven between the frequent fast-paced action scenes.
