Plot

His Three Daughters is about the three daughters of a man afflicted by cancer. Their names are Katie, Rachel and Christina. They were estranged all this time, but it is only when their father reaches the end of his cancer battle, that they decide to reunite once more to take care of their sick father. While their father, Vincent, is in hospice care, the three daughters don’t get along at all at the apartment. Before they reunited, Rachel was the only one taking care of their father. She is not even his biological daughter yet she was the only one there, taking care of him. When the three daughters start living together, there are a lot of criticisms from Katie on Rachel’s ways of taking care of their father. First of all, Katie criticizes Rachel for her habit of smoking marijuana inside the apartment. Rachel says that Vincent did not mind it, but Katie insists that she should smoke outside and makes her do it outside. Then, she gets pissed at Rachel for not having made Vincent sign a DO NOT RESUSCITATE while he was still completely conscious. Later on, Katie also discovers that the only food available in the fridge were apples, three bags of them and nothing else! For this, Rachel faces more of Katie’s criticism.

One of the hospice workers who is in charge of their father, visits their apartment one day to warn them about their father’s condition. She tells them that he is in a very critical condition and could pass away at any moment. Soon after, Katie begins working on her father’s obituary. Meanwhile, Rachel cannot bear to enter the room that Vincent is in. One day, Rachel’s boyfriend, Benjy who comes over and criticizes Rachel’s sisters for treating her poorly despite Rachel being the only one of the three of them who took the time to take care of Vincent when he got sick. He goes on to explain that the reason why there are only apples in the fridge is because Vincent refused to eat anything but apples. Katie realizes her mistake and apologizes to Rachel. Rachel however, refuses to accept her apology and because of this, the two start quarreling. Christina then gets in between both of them and screams that she hates them. This affects Katie and she plans on going back home, Christina regrets her words and apologizes to Katie. Then, Katie apologizes to Rachel, but only for her misunderstanding of the apples in the fridge. During the next days, the relationships between the sisters gradually improve. When their father is about to die, he asks the sisters to take him to his favourite chair. They take him and he ends up passing away on that very chair. The film ends with the three sisters holding each other on a couch and grieving their father’s death.

Star Performance

Carrie Coon expertly showed the complex emotions of her character through her acting.

Elizabeth Olsen perfectly represents the middle child.

Natasha Lyonne also gives an exceptional performance.

Analysis

The number of tragic and comic elements are just enough to balance each other out. The cast did a great job and performed each of their roles very well. The way grief from a loved one’s suffering is portrayed, is very realistic. The film has a realistic ending that does not finish on a positive note, but rather, one where the tragic circumstances have to be accepted along with past regrets.

What’s There?

  • The film can easily make watchers emotionally invested.
  • Grief is shown from a very realistic point of view, no sugarcoating.
  • The film shows how both life and death are equally important.
  • The humour and tragedy in the film are a perfect balance.

What’s Not There?

  • There is no negative aspect.

Verdict

This is an excellent film and I recommend everybody to watch. However if you do not want to be so emotionally invested in a film, or would rather not get emotional because of some tragic themes in it, then I suggest you not watch this film.
