Plot
The story begins by describing how the French Revolution took place in 1789, and how King Louis and his backers were put to death. Then came the turn of the last Queen of France, Marie Antoinette, she was guillotined with great disrespect by the public. After some time, she is brought near a machine called a guillotine and is killed by cutting off her head. But something else was going on in the mind of a commander standing there, whose name was Napoleon Bonaparte, who would go on to become the first emperor of France. Commissioner Paul Boris informs that the British Navy has captured the port of Talon because of which more than half of the French soldiers along with their votes are stranded there. If Napoleon loses, then France will plunge. So, they decided to take control of that place from where the British soldiers controlled the Talon city. Napoleon planned to provide the cannons of the British soldiers to their commanders. Then, one night in Talon City, when the British soldiers were drunk and having fun, Napoleon’s soldiers planted bombs outside the fort and then carried out a massive surprise attack. The rest of the movie revolves around Napoleon’s ruling and a glimpse of his love life.
Star Performance
The movie is a visual masterpiece, especially the raw and realistic battle scenes, which were captured with dazzling intensity. Joaquin Phoenix is mesmerizing and perfect as Napoleon. He captures the emperor's charisma, intelligence, and ruthlessness with a raw and visceral intensity in his acting. Phoenix's performance is one of the best of his career and is sure to be remembered for years to come. The movie also provides plenty of fantastic cinematography.
Analysis
The film is a visually staggering and emotionally orotund portrait of Napoleon's life, from his beginnings in Corsica to his wrap-speed rise to power and his eventual downfall is portrayed accurately in the film. Scott's masterful direction is evident in the film's magnificent battle scenes, which are some of the most impressive ever put on screen. The film's battle scenes are not just a visually stunning but are also historically precise. Scott's guides worked closely with historians to ensure that the film's depiction of Napoleon's battles was as faithful to the historical record as possible. The scene closes up with a heartbreaking attempt suicide, leaving audiences with a sense of intense hopelessness. There was an immoderate number of scenes that seemed to serve no purpose other than to fill screen time. The portrayal of Waterloo also gets slightly more consciousness than other scenes and is at least entertaining to watch, although historically inaccurate.
