Plot
The storyline opens in the 1970s in the jungles of Peru. A team formed of a pregnant lady, Constance Webb, and Ezekiel Sims were searching for a unique spider with special healing properties. When Constance Web finally gets hold of the spider, Ezekiel claims the spider for himself and betrays the rest of the team. Later, a group of tribes in the forest helped Web to give birth to Cassandra, her daughter. But the lady could not survive while giving birth. The scene shifts to thirty years later, the story goes like Cassandra possesses some special powers, and has visions about the future happenings. Later Ezekiel got to know about her and he started following her. Will Ezekiel harm Cassandra? Will Cassandra get to know about her other’s truth? The rest of the story revolves around it.Â
Star Performance
Dakota Johnson’s performance as a superhero character was an amazing character, reflecting elegance, courage, and smartness. Tahir Rahim fits as Ezekiel Sims, a mean self-catered man who wanted to track down the cause of his death and eliminate the cause. Overall, the cast did pretty well with what little they were given and definitely brought life to poorly written-characters. Also, the writing, the cinematography, and the sets were amazing. Although, the scriptwriting and presentation could have been a little better.
Analysis
It's a superhero movie with little to no action and a painfully long setup for an underwhelming final act. The origin story is interesting in a comic book way, leaving you with questions and potentials that make you want to know more about that part of the Marvel Universe. The film over-explains simple things as if it is guiding the viewer by the hand and revealing that a pigeon seemingly dead, is alive. Also, the audio is weirdly synched up so it feels like you are watching a dubbed low-budget movie. Most of the movie deals with Cassandra’s attempts to protect three teenage girls, which makes the storyline predictable. The character of the villain is also not clear, he is constantly complaining about 'everything he has built' being destroyed. The film has no interest in exploring the definition of ‘everything’
What’s There?
• Cinematic masterpiece.Â
What’s Not There?
• Dull scriptwriting
• Boring and predictable storyline.
Verdict
If you want a superhero movie, this isn’t it, but unfortunately, that's what it was marketed as. But if you wish for entertainment, and to engage yourself, you can give this movie a shot.
