Plot
After the chaos in Joker(2019) Arthur(Joaquin Phoenix) is put in a mental institution (Arkham) where he meets Harley Quinn (Lady Gaga) and falls for her, while also dealing with his two identities.
Star Performance
Joaquin Phoenix is one of the best actors to come out of Hollywood. Again, reprising the role of Joker and doing it with such perfection is masterful. The difference he easily creates between Joker and Arthur is commendable. There is always this sadness in his eyes, which makes you empathize with him but also scared when he becomes an absolute menace. Lady Gaga, a powerhouse of talent excels in the musical scenes, her character is not fleshed out well and is underwritten, but she does a good job. The rest of the actors also do a formidable job.
Analysis
Everybody remembers the rage Joker caused when it was released in 2019, a small to mid budget film turned out to be a blockbuster, becoming the most successful, R rated film, till Deadpool & Wolverine broke that record. And as the golden rule of cinema, if a product is successful we will churn out more. Joker brought out the tragic story of an individual who was ignored, abused, and lied to all his life, the delusions took over, assuming to take matters into his own hands and became a vigilante of chaos and unknowingly becoming messiah in the disruption that already existed. The film was an homage to the Martin Scorcese films. Likely, Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy. The sequel is a meta commentary on how an individual, medium influences you. Nobody sees Joker as an idol. That's why Anarchy is liked only in films. The DC character is liked because of his intimidation, a man with no purpose but the sequel dismantles this and tells the viewer about the impact the first film created. The film is a commentary on the Joker film and how as a society we don’t like something opposite of what we expect. There is no development of the story. The court scenes are just about the destruction caused in the first film. One of the most significant demerits of the film is it being a musical genre, the integration of Lady Gaga in the cast somewhat forced the makers to make this film a musical. The music integration is frustrating, some moments it works but in other moments like when Arthur simply wants to talk to Harley and she starts singing out of nowhere, even he is asking her to stop singing and listen to him. The screenplay is constantly halted because some songs don’t even take the story forward. Even from the romantic aspect, Lady Gaga’s character is a Manic Pixie Dream Girl, always telling Arthur he’s not what he thinks he is. There is nothing wrong with the meta-commentary but how it has been showcased. The film’s cinematography of the film is stunning, the color grading is so well done, the way Arthur‘s delusions are showcased with bright colors, to when he is in the real world. Joker: Folie à Deux is an underdeveloped romance with a constantly halted screenplay.

Verdict
Joker: Folie à Deux is a distinction between the Joker and Arthur, how the society sees him, how we expect him to be, who he really is and or he just wants to be seen. The film has outstanding performances and is visually stunning. But if you’ve loved the first film, this film is a downer.
